Verona-Seal-of-Solomon

Verona's illustration of the Seal

The Seal of Solomon,[1] also known as the Sigil of Solomon[2] or the Seal of Suleiman bin Daoud,[3] was a deal created by Suleiman that made it so that Others who were bound by it could not harm innocents wantonly. In exchange it provided them with protections as well.[3]

Details[]

A formal acknowledgement on the part of an Other, that they won’t interfere with mankind without excuse, they’ll obey certain rules, and the practitioners will leave them be. Typically an Other bears some symbol or token of this bargain.  Over time it’s gained a power of its own and being sealed physically alters the Other, but it also affords them certain protections against practitioners.[4] The Seal was a physical diagram that could be marked on the floor.[5][6]

While most of the older Others are affected by this, many of the newer ones aren't and can act without it interfering with them, however the universe itself still conspires to protect innocent humans.[7] An Other who isn't bound by the seal and also elect to be bound by it to have a greater significance in the scope of things and a power source, but it will open them up to more ways of being sealed and handled as a result.[1]

The main effects of the seal are:

  • The Other suffers restrictions against lying, similar to practioners.[8][1]
  • The Other is barred from interfering with mankind "without excuse".[4][7]
  • The Other becomes vulnerable to certain standard practitioner techniques and methods of attack.[1][9]
    • The Other becomes easier to track.[10]
    • The Other becomes capable of being truly bound.[1]
  • The Other gains protection against certain standard practitioner techniques and methods of attack.[4]
  • The Other becomes more a part of "the way things are".[1]
  • The seal serves as a source of power for the Other.[1]
  • The Other is physically altered, with some token or mark representing the Seal.[4]

In addition a bogeyman bound by it would make them easier to keep track of and form deals with.[10][11] It would nail them down in shape, form, and demeanor, stopping the Abyss from getting as much traction with them and offering more durability.[12] It allows them to maintain the balance of Other and Human within. In the case of Blake it could quite possibly slow down the rate at which the rift between him and Rose widened due to their origins.[10]

In addition to it's main use, it would also act to repel Demons of the Choir of Madness.[6]

History[]

Suleiman bin Daoud created the Seal, bargaining with and challenging powerful Others and having them impose the Seal on other Others in turn.[4] (This may be the same great gathering of "all the forces of the world... Gods, incarnations, and other powers" that established the current rules of magic referenced in Black Lamb's Blood.)[13] Many Others viewed the Seal as a way to stabilize their relationship with burgeoning humanity,[14] and it served to formalize relations between human and Other somewhat.[15] According to Miss, many Others viewed the Seal as a final concession to humanity, establishing immutable rules following a long series of deals that had slowly mutated and been twisted to give humanity more power.[14]

The Seal and associated bargains Solomon created formed the basis of the modern system of Awakening (many Awakening rituals still use Suleiman's original language),[16] the modern system of Innocence[17] and the role of Judges and Lords.[14]

The workings of Solomon let humanity defend itself, bringing about the modern age where humans are more than mere prey.[4][18] The protections of Innocence have become a part of universal karma, although they are still much stronger against those Others that have accepted the Seal.[4][17] With the new relationship established, the once-standard Wild Practitioners serving Other patrons became rare and increasingly little-known.[15][19]

The Seal does not seem to have been widespread in North America prior to the Columbian exchange,[20] although it is possible this referred to another seal.

It was described for new practitioners in chapter one of the modern book "Others Vol 1".[3] Rose Thorburn Junior and Alister Behaim later used it in warding against some demonic Imps.[6][2]

Trivia[]

Seal of Solomon, Stowe MS 16

The Seal of Solomon, depicted in the 15th century manuscript Stowe MS 16

According to medieval folklore, the Seal of Solomon was the signet ring of King Solomon (Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd). It granted powers such as control over demons, spirits, and jinni, and the ability to speak to animals. In most sources, the Seal was created by God Himself and given directly to Solomon.

The symbol on the signet, which granted it its power, was frequently depicted as a pentagram or hexagram. This symbol eventually became standardized as the Star of David, the modern-day symbol of Judaism.

I suppressed a sigh. “You’re talking about the seal of Solomon.”

Lola nodded. “You know your stuff.

“That opens me up to a lot of forms of attack,” I said. “Being properly bound, being targeted by certain vectors…”

“It protects you too,” Lola said. “Gives you a power source. You become a part of the greater scheme of things.” - [https://pactwebserial.wordpress.com/2014/09/30 Excerpt] from Malfeasance 11.9

Rose explained, “Suleiman. Sorcerer king. He was the first practitioner who really worked for the betterment of mankind and actually made headway. He established rules and contracts, and he systematically worked to challenge the biggest, baddest Others out there that he could, then used them to help get others. It brought about an age where humans could stop being the playthings of Others and start developing as a civilization.”

  13. At some point in history, all the forces of the world gathered, recognizing that there could only be chaos if they continued fighting amongst themselves.  Gods, incarnations, and other powers realized that with the power they could each bring to bear, certain actions couldn’t be permitted.  Trust was impossible to maintain.

Laws were set in place.  Those same laws are the ones that a practitioner agrees to abide by, in order to broker access to what lies beyond the curtain. - Excerpt from Black Lamb's Blood, quoted in Interlude 4
  14. 14.0 14.1 14.2 “To try to formalize deals. To hitch their wagons to that of humanity, by striking deals that would establish them as Patrons. They teach their secret knowledge and ways of manipulating the world, in exchange for servitude… until mankind begins sharing that knowledge in ways few Others can stay ahead of, on paper and in tomes. Knowledge, instead of being taught from patron Other to Practitioner, becomes something kept in families. Others try to formalize a kind of equality, such as the familiar bond, and to make firm agreements about oaths, lies, and declarations, out of fear of being tricked again. But these things become their own weapon that humans wield. Humans sprawl, they work with concerted effort, and they establish and mutate patterns. [...] The Seal of Solomon, as it exists now, was essentially intended as one last concession. Or it was meant to be the last. A binding that would not be mutated further, that would be universal enough that it could be trusted by the Other, instead of having hooks and more traps attached to it. And as part of it, there was a deal that practitioners would manage the affairs of Others but select, powerful Others would have some say over the movements and dealings of Practitioners. Lords and judges. Roles above all other things.” - Excerpt from Back Away 5.d

    “Hm.”

    “What’s that?” Zed asked.

“Practitioners of old ways, Zed.  Patron Others and practitioners who are tied to them.  The way things were done before Solomon, when they were formalized.  Which leads to questions about who and what spearheaded the organization of this little triad of practitioners.”

    [...]

Alexander smiled.  “Knowing that you’re wild practitioners with multiple patrons helps me to make sense of you.  It tells me you’re probably strong, with a wide base of power.  It means I can expect you to be… interesting students.”

“Unruly and interesting,” Mrs. Durocher amended. - [https://palewebserial.wordpress.com/2020/08/29 Excerpt] from Leaving a Mark 4.4
  16. “Suleiman Bin Daoud took the first steps to establishing a new relationship between human and Other,” Miss said.  “A lasting compact between human and Other.  There are forms of this ritual where we recite old words in your language and in Suleiman’s.  There are forms where we conduct old traditions.  At the heart of it, however, lies an invitation.  For you to join our world, and for us to cooperate with you in interacting with the world of man.  Would you invite us in, Verona, Avery, and Lucy?” - Excerpt from Lost for Words 1.2

He sent it back at the ones who had created it, with a touch of added power, hostility, outrage, given freely, and the compact of the Invader’s ways of dealing with spirits.  A seal, which made the crow both less of what it had been and more a part of things.  A different manner of things. - Excerpt from Interlude 11
